Dealer Mistakes Every Floor Supervisor Must Catch

Catching and correcting dealing breakdowns will be another expectation of a good floor supervisor. Dealers make mistakes. They’re human. It happens. It’s part of the job. Nobody will be perfect all the time.

Our job as supervisors is to notice these mistakes and correct them. Doing this helps keep the game fair for everyone. There are essentially two types of mistakes: procedural and monetary.

Procedural mistakes occur when the dealer deals the game incorrectly. Usually, these types of mistakes are brought up with the dealer when they are tapped off the table, and you have a second to tell them discreetly that they need to fix the way they are doing something.

Monetary mistakes are any kind of mistake that involves actual money being paid or taken. These require immediate fixing when they are noticed.

Here are the mistakes you’ll see the most of each type:

With procedural mistakes, you’ll see:

• Incorrect shuffle
• Dealing in the wrong order
• Faulty chip handling
• Adding up hand totals wrong
• Incorrect card placement
• Wandering eyes
• Not dealing in a timely manner

Procedural mistakes aren’t limited to those. There are a ton of procedures, and for every procedure to follow, there is a way to break it. These, though, are the most common.

Now for monetary mistakes. Monetary mistakes include, but are not limited to:

• Incorrect blackjack payouts
• Incorrect bonus bet payouts
• Making incorrect change for a buy-in
• Giving out an incorrect color-up
• Paying or pushing a loss
• Collecting or pushing a win
• Paying a bet incorrectly due to not breaking down multi-color bets

Here’s a common dealer mistake that’s super easy for dealers to do, but absolutely detrimental to the casino. On Free Bet Blackjack, sometimes the dealers forget that 22 is a push, and they pay everyone like it’s a bust on a regular blackjack table, especially if it’s the relief dealer that’s only there for 20 minutes and maybe has regular blackjack tables on their string. It can happen very easily.

Here’s a fun fact about that. If that happens twice within an hour, the casino is giving away every ounce of house advantage they have on that game. All of it!

There’s a great example of a mistake that is absolutely necessary to catch if it happens.

Normally, with dealer mistakes, it’s good to talk to them 1-on-1 away from guests and other coworkers, which we will get into more later. But when it comes to monetary mistakes, they must be fixed immediately. We have a fiduciary responsibility to our guests to conduct financial transactions correctly.
