Changing Your Mindset and Strategy to Become a Better Blackjack Player
Blackjack is one of the most popular casino table games in the world, and for good reason. It offers a perfect blend of chance and strategy, making it appealing for both casual and serious players.
Beginners often see blackjack as a game that involves trying to get as close to 21 as possible, but there’s more to the strategy than first meets the eye. By shifting your mindset and refining your decisions, you can become a better blackjack player and improve the odds.
The Beginners Approach
Blackjack has a broad appeal because it’s relatively accessible. The basic rules are simple to understand, and even new players can grasp the concept of asking the dealer to either Hit or Stand.
Having said that, a lot of beginners take an almost intuitive approach that borders on guessing and is based only on looking at their own cards. They Hit or Stand to try to get to 21, often making subpar decisions that lower their overall odds of winning.
If you’re not too bothered about results and you’re playing for entertainment, there’s nothing wrong with this way of playing. It’s just not the optimal way in terms of Return to Player (RTP).
Learning Basic Strategy
Looking at your own cards only gives you half of the picture. If you have a King, for example, your hand value is 10 and you probably know intuitively that you’re always safe to Hit. Other decisions are not as straightforward.
In blackjack, you’re not actually aiming to make 21 every hand. You’re playing against the dealer. If your hand is higher than theirs or they go bust, you win the bet. The dealer has one card showing, known as the upcard, which gives you information about their hand.
By looking at the dealer’s upcard and comparing it to your own hand, you can work out the odds that you’ll beat them by hitting or standing. This is the basis of blackjack strategy.
These calculations would be incredibly complex to do at the tables while you’re playing, so blackjack players who are interested in improving will study basic strategy away from the tables so they can apply it when they play.
Depending on the game type and rules, applying basic strategy in blackjack can reduce the house edge to around 99%, giving you better long term results.
Choosing the Right Games
There are lots of different variations of blackjack, each with slightly different dealer rules, bonus bets, and payouts for hitting a blackjack hand. If you’re playing at a physical casino, you won’t have much choice, as you’ll have to play whatever the casino has running.
Online casinos offer a much wider selection of blackjack variations, including Classic, European, Multi-Hand, Side Bet, and Live Dealer blackjack.
Familiarize yourself with the game rules and be prepared to adjust your basic strategy according to the dealer rules.
Blackjack Tips that Will Instantly Improve Your Results
It will take a long time to memorize and master blackjack strategy charts for every decision and dealer upcard, but it’s worth doing if you want the best results. Until then, you can follow a few simplified rules to put you on the right track:
- 8 and below always hits.
- 9 doubles against dealer 3-6, otherwise hits.
- 10 doubles against dealer 2-9, otherwise hit.
- 11 always doubles.
- 12 stands against dealer 4-6, otherwise hits.
- 13 – 16 stands against dealer 2-6, otherwise hits.
- 17 and up always stands.
Even just remembering that 8 and below always hits and 17 and above always stands will make your strategy better than a beginner’s approach. Learn all of these strategy rules, and you’ll have the most common situations that you’ll encounter at the tables covered.
After that, you should start to learn when to split pairs and when to double. You should also eventually adapt your strategy for each blackjack variation. By then, you’ll be playing near-perfect blackjack strategy.
Bitcoin Blackjack and Crypto Payments
One of the advantages of playing blackjack online is that some casinos allow you to deposit and withdraw using cryptocurrency. If you prefer using Bitcoin rather than traditional payment methods, Bitcoin blackjack gives you another way to fund your play. However, it’s worth checking which cryptocurrencies are accepted and whether any fees or withdrawal conditions apply before you get started.
Just like with any other blackjack game, using Bitcoin doesn’t change the strategy. You’ll still need to consider your hand, the dealer’s upcard, and the rules of the game to make the best decisions. Make sure you understand how crypto payments work at your chosen casino, so you can focus on applying your blackjack strategy at the tables.
Bankroll Management and Emotional Control
Part of switching your mindset so you can think more like a serious blackjack player, is to use bankroll management so that you are playing responsibly and maximizing how far your funds will go.
Bankroll management involves setting aside funds that are separate to the rest of life that you can afford to play with. Then, you should stick to betting limits that are well within your bankroll, so that you can afford to play hundreds of hands rather than risking loads on one or a few hands.
This improves enjoyment, lowers risk, and gives you time to put your basic strategy into action at the tables. Becoming a better player isn’t about increasing your bets; it’s about sticking to your limits.
By choosing the right games, learning blackjack strategy, and applying good bankroll management, you’ll step far outside the realms of beginners.
