Next on the list is step number 14, Tenacity. What does Tenacity mean? It means persistence, determination, grit, stubbornness, patience and resolve. It means having a great work ethic and a willingness to do what needs to be done without cutting corners. Dealers need a lot of tenacity in order to do well and stay in this industry for a significant amount of time. Not only do you need to be able to deal with difficult players, but at the same time you have to stay positive, keep your math straight and be able to protect your game while following policies and procedures. And the hard part is to keep going and to do this day after day, for years.
A common saying amongst dealers is that you need a thick skin in order to stay in the industry. Some people have a tough skin and some people tend to get jaded. But look at it this way, doesn’t having nasty, rotten tables make you appreciate fun, enjoyable tables even more?
Casino dealers don’t produce goods or any tangible items that we can give the customer. The only thing we have to offer them is entertainment, in the form of playing a game and interacting with the dealer. This makes dealing casino table games, a service oriented business, where the ability to handle people is of utmost importance. In order to be good, the dealer will need to be consistent with valuable customer relations, a friendly personality and efficient dealing skills. This can be hard but if you remember that customers are people and you try to communicate with them in a genuine way then this will make it easier for you.
